Akron Airport Presentation

The Akron Airport dates back to the 1930’s, with the
first airmail flight originating out of Akron in 1938.
Our presenter, Allen Kidder, will discuss the growth
from a grass runway with one airplane, to recognition
as an airport by the FAA in the 1960’s, use by Ford

Gum’s Douglas DC-3 at the airport, and the installa-
tion in the 70’s of a paved runway with lights, taxi-
ways, hangars and an office.

Fast-forward to the present where there are 65 air-
planes based at Akron and 18 people who are gainful-
ly employed there, a flight school, and an aircraft

maintenance shop. Did you know that there are 10
local businesses that use the airport? Did you know
that there are more than 34 people who learned to fly

at the Akron Airport who moved on to aviation ca-
reers as airline pilots, military pilots, corporate pilots,

air traffic controllers, flight instructors and missionary
pilots? We will also learn about the airport’s current

facilities, community activities, interesting and histor-
ic airplanes based there, and the airport’s near-term
